You can be so close to a thing – your business goals, your dreams for making an impact, your operational challenges – that it’s impossible to see it clearly, and in a way that results in forward motion.

Can’t You Just Photoshop That?!

I’ve worked in #CommercialPhotography for over 15 years. And the most often asked question I’ve heard (when clients see something problematic in an image) is, “Can’t you just Photoshop that?”

The simple answer is, yes. Most people are aware enough about all-things-digital to know that today’s image editing software is capable (in the right hands) of creating breathtaking, impactful imagery – and that most pixel-ish problems can be fixed.

The not-so-simple answer is, yes-but…

Retouching digital images can be challenging, tedious work. It requires #expertise and #perspective (among other things). Having Photoshop on your computer doesn’t make you a high-end retoucher, any more than owning a hammer makes you a carpenter. I have considerable skill where Photoshop is concerned, but I have colleagues – professional retouchers – whose work makes mine look like it belongs on a refrigerator door with with all the other preschool art. So, like any other craftsman, I’m working on growing my expertise.

Perspective Required.

I’m also working on growing my perspective.

Some images have problems that can only be corrected by zooming in 800% or more, to work on an almost pixel-by-pixel level. It’s mind-numbing . . . to the point where, sometimes I forget to zoom-out and check my progress from a wider perspective. Then when I do, I discover the problem I was trying to fix has only been made worse because I didn’t zoom-out sooner . . . and get perspective.

If you’re a #solopreneur, #SmallBusinessOwner, or someone trying to grow a #brand or #business, you can relate. You can be so close to a thing – your business goals, your dreams of making an impact, your operational challenges – that it’s impossible to see it clearly, and in a way that results in forward motion.

Ask Someone Else What They See.

Take a moment to step back today, to create some space between you and “the thing” . . . and even ask someone else what they see from their point of view.  Another perspective might prove to be educational.

And if “the thing” is about #BrandStrategy, #CreativeContent, or #DigitalMarketing – give us a shout! We’d love to know what you’re working on and how we can help.
